Paraben
It is a chemical additive for protective purposes, which is used to prevent bacterial and fungal growth in the production of cosmetics and personal care products. It can be used in different forms such as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben or benzylparaben in the content of the products.
Paraben can cause irritation and allergic reactions on the skin, such as eczema. There are data that it is a chemical that can be absorbed through the skin and accumulate in various tissues.
Although it has not been conclusively proven, there are serious doubts that it can cause changes in the endocrine system (glands), affect estrogen and testosterone levels.
Although the direct cause-and-effect relationship with some types of cancer has not yet been confirmed, it is being investigated whether it is carcinogenic.
For all these reasons, the use of parabens in cosmetic products was restricted by the European Union in May 2013 and completely banned in baby products. Likewise, in January 2015, the use of parabens was stopped in 10 Asian countries.
SLS – Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, SLES – Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate
Sodium lauryl sulfate SLES and sodium lauryl sulfate SLS are sodium salts of sulfate. These coconut-derived chemicals are used to create a large amount of foam in shampoos. When it comes into contact with the skin, it causes the oil on the skin surface to dissolve, which can cause dryness and irritation. SLS, or SLES, is classified as low and medium hazardous.
When the baby in question, and even more specifically the newborn, is present, the sensitivity also increases. Especially after birth, your baby’s skin is not adequately protected because the Stratum Corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) has not reached sufficient thickness. Therefore, the risk of absorption of various chemicals through the skin is higher. In this case, the skin tends to become drier and crustier and can become open to serious infections. For all these reasons, it is extremely important to use products made for babies and control their content.
