German photographer Andreas Gursky‘s panoramic print “Rhein II“, which broke the record with 4.3 million dollars, is part of a series of 6 separate photographs.
Other works by Gursky from his 1999 River Rhine series are on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London and the Pinakothek der Moderne Museum in Munich.
The photo, which gives a black-and-white feeling with its gray and green colors, can of course find a buyer at a high price, since the artist is a very important person, but the infinity and elements that are expected to be understood in the photo make it the most expensive painting. The previous record in photographic art belonged to Cindy Sherman’s untitled color photograph from 1981, which sold for $ 3.9 million and, like all her works, again showed itself.
An estimated price of $ 2.5 million had been set for the photo by the German artist Gursky.
Rhein II is the largest of six photographs of different sizes in the same series.
Gursky said, “A certain point overlooking the Rhine has always fascinated me very much. However, a single photo would not be enough to convey this image.”he said; he said that he could not bear the thought of removing such a photo of the Rhine river from his mind for 1.5 years.
Gursky said he eventually destroyed the elements he didn’t want in the photos with digital technology.
Christie’s notes that the photograph does not point to a specific point on the river; rather, in a platonic sense, it represents the movement of a water being in nature.
